Spirit se pone de pie en Marte

Doce mecanismos se activaron exitosamente elevando el robot sobre sus seis ruedas, informaron los científicos de la NASA.

Pero los investigadores temen que la bolsa de aire utilizada para proteger al Spirit en su descenso pueda obstaculizar su desplazamiento.

Es por eso que los encargados de la misión planean rotar el robot 120 grados antes de ordenarle que avance, para garantizar un sendero libre de obstáculos.

La liberación de las ruedas y la elevación del Spirit es el último éxito de la misión de la NASA.

Puesta en pie

Chris Voorhees, el ingeniero a cargo del proceso, dijo que todos los controladores de la estación de Pasadena siguieron intensamente “la puesta en pie” del Spirit, mientras escuchaban la canción de Bob Marley “Get up, Stand Up” (Levántate, ponte de pie).
“(Fue) uno de los procedimientos más complicados que jamás haya realizado una nave robotizada”, dijo Voorhees y agregó:

“Hemos dejado a Spirit en una posición muy confortable. Ella está durmiendo ahora, cómodamente en sus seis ruedas”.

La rotación del robot está prevista para el lunes y el desplazamiento del mismo comenzaría a últimas horas del martes, tiempo de Estados Unidos.

Aunque el Spirit no ha comenzado a rodar, ya ha sido capaz de enviar una gran cantidad de información a los científicos sobre el planeta rojo.

Increíbles imágenes en colores han permitido a los expertos de la NASA tener una detallada idea del lugar del aterrizaje. Una panorámica de 360 grados será generada en los próximos días.
